SUN KOSHI RIVER JOURNEY |
This river journey covers almost 300 km from
near the Tibetan border to the Indian plains. We venture into remote
areas, where there is days of walking to the nearest road. The trip
can be done both in kayak and raft.

|
The Sun Koshi river journey is a 10-day adventure on one of the world's
great rivers. We start close to the Tibetan border and paddle 280 km through
class II - IV white water to the take out when we reach the indian plains.
In the first couple of days on the trip we get a chance to get used to
river life! When the River drops down into the remote valley and offers
us it's biggest and best rapids .The trip is raft supported and non kayakers
are welcome to come on the raft. We camp on beaches at the riverside.
Our trip is expedition style where everyone is involved in loading and
unloading our gear raft, setting camp and cooking. We carry all we need
for our ten days river journey on the raft. Some of the best expedition
kayakers in the country lead this river expedition and are supported by
saftey kayakers. Non kayakers have a chance to learn to kayak in the easier
part of the river. The Sun Koshi journey is an incredible combination
of powerful whitewater, stunning scenery, a chance to explore remote villages,
and truly quiet and introspective evenings in our beach camps. This is
beside the paddling a truly exciting way to explore Nepal and Himalayan
culture. Sun Koshi is considered to be one of the world's ten classic
river journeys!

| DAY 1: |
Predeparture meeting at Royal Beach Camp Kathmandu office
in the afternoon to fit kayaks and meet all the participants and guides.
The trip leader will go through what we need to bring, weather conditions
and clothing and departure time for the next day etc. Hotel in Kathmandu
and group dinner. |
| DAY 2: |
At 7 am we meet in RBC Kathmandu office, store baggage
and finalize plans. After a quick breakfast we drive to Dolalghat
- our river starting point of the Sun Koshi. The drive is spectacular
with magnificent views of the Himalayan Ranges on a clear day. Upon
arrival at Dolalghat we unload gear, lunch will be served and a full
safety briefing will be given by your expedition leader. We paddle
our first strech of class II-III water and camp on the first beach,
learning how to set up our camp for the night. |
| DAY 3: |
After breakfast we pack up the gear and start rolling
down the river. Today you will encounter a big water class 4 rapid
"The Meat grinder". It is a fairly straight run down the center.
Round the corner the Tamba Kosi river is joining from the left. We
camp on the perfect beach on the confluence. Right next to the camp
there is a Shiva temple. |
| DAY 4: |
Today is an easy drift in the morning and after lunch
we punch a few good rapids. There is one more river joining here,
the Likhu Khola. A few kilometers after the confulence we go thrrough
a long class 4 rapid called "High Anxiety". After a couple
of more hours of paddling we look for a camp on the beach. |
| DAY 5: |
Today starts with several class 3+ rapids before we arrive in Harkapur,
a small village right by the river. At this point we have done half
of our journey. Right after the village there is one of the hardest
rapids on the rive, "Harkapur II". We scout the rapid
and shoot right down the middle. A few km below "Harkapur II",
the mighty Dudh Kosi River (the river draining from Mt. Everest)
joins the Sun Koshi. Now the volume of the river is about three
times more then on the first day. We paddle a couple of more hours
down to Rai Gha,t a small village on the river left and camp.
|
| DAY 6: |
Below Rai Ghat we meet some small rapids leading to
bigger ones, like "Jaws" and "Dead Mans Eddy".
After doing the harder rapids we have couple of hours of easy drift
before arriving to "Rihno Rock". We punch "Rihno Rock"
and enter the "Jungle Corridor". We camp in the jungle tonight
and save the hard water for the morning. |
| DAY 7: |
Today is an exciting day as you will encounter the "Jungle
Corridor" a continuing white water sections of class III-IV
rapids. At the end of this section we arrive at the waterfall beach
where we do a lunch break and take a short walk to the waterfall
for a shower. Afternoon drift down to the next camp.
|
| DAY 8: |
Now we have a few more rapids left on the last stretch
of the river bringing you to the last class IV rapid "The Big
Dipper" with a series of huge standing waves. After this rapid
the river mallow out and you will arrive at the Arun and Tamur River
confulances. Theese two rivers make the Sun Koshi change name into
the Sapta Koshi. It´s our last night camping on the river journey.
|
| DAY 9: |
In the morning it is a couple of hours drift on the Sapta Koshi
and we stop to visit an old Hindu tempel at Braha Chetra. We arrive
in the lowlands, Terai, and the hills dramatically opens up in to
the Indian plains. Your classic and memorable river journey will
